History
The origin of the Auster refers back to an American sport aircraft, the Taylorcraft Auster B.
The English factory Taylorcraft Aeroplanes Limited acquired the license rights in 1939 and built Model C with a Lycoming 0-145 A2 of 55 hp. The Auster Plus Model C was a version with a 65 hp Lycoming engine.
Soon a version, designated Model Plus D, equipped a British engine, a Blackburn Cirrus Minor I 90 hp, was developed. This engine was not only powerful, but also quieter .
Of this version over 100 examples were built and it entered service as Auster I in 1941, a so-called Air Observation Post (AOP) aircraft for use by the British Army.
The Auster II, a version with an American Lycoming 0-290 engine, never entered production because the engine was hardly available at that time.
This led to the development of the Auster Mark III which had the Lycoming engine replaced by a DeHavilland Gipsy Major. Noteworthy were the individual exhaust pipes for each cylinder .
The next version, the Auster Mark IV was provided with an enlarged cabin and was equipped with the engine Lycoming 0-290.
The Auster Mark V was a blind fly version of the Auster IV.
Shortly after the end of the war the Auster VI was developed from the Auster IV/V and was fitted an extended undercarriage and "airfoil flaps", so that it had better starting characteristics than the previous versions .
As an engine DeHavilland Gipsy Major was applied and further the (internal) fuel supply was increased.
During and immediately after World War II, the Auster was used for artillery observation, evacuation and light transport. Since the 60s of the 20th century, these tasks were mainly done by helicopters.

History
The Taylorcraft factory developed in 1941 the Model D tandem trainer designed for artillery observation and light transport and courier services.
After a successful evaluation by the US Army of four examples under the designation YO-57, 70 Taylorcraft O-57 Grasshopper were ordered. These were equipped with a Continental O 170-3 engine rated 65 hp.
Soon 336 examples of a modified version, designated O-57A, was ordered with a radio and extra cockpit glazing.
During the second world war, the aircraft was used by the Army Air Force for directing artillery fire. It was also used for liaison tasks, the ability to take off and land on rough landing zone came in handy. In 1942 the two variants were subsequently referred to as L-2 and L-2A.
A later version was the L-2B, especially for artillery observation, of which 490 were built and a variant with wing spoilers and a fully-cooled engine, the L-2M, of which 900 were ordered.
A number of civilian models, a few of which had been built, were "claimed" and received designations of L-2C to L-2L.
Also 253 gliders were still designated as ST-100, built on the basis of the L-2 for use as a glider trainers.
After the war some L-2s were passed to foreign air forces, many aircraft went into civilian hands.

During 1944 the NEIAF received two Taylorcraft L-2Ms under Lend-lease conditions. both aircraft were stationed at AFB Canberra at the NEI-PEP (Netherlands East Indies - Personnel and Equipment Pool).
Initially they were used as target tow for the training of airgunners for the B-25s. Both aircraft were also used for liaison duties.
The TCO-010 crashed in October 1944 at Canberra, the TCO-011 moved with the PEP in September to Bundaberg and was used there as a replacement of the Tiger Moth. Aspirant fighterpilots first flew several hours with the L-2 and were then converted to the P-40 or the Mustang.
Early 1946 the aircraft was damaged and not used any more. In June 1946 the aircraft moved together with the PEP to Dutch New Guinea.
The ML became the owner of the aircraft and it was repaired and in November 1946 added to the inventory of the OOS (Overgangs Opleidngs School = Conversion Trainings School). It was mainly used for joy flights.
By the end of July 1947 TCO-011 was re-registered and received serial R-334.
In 1950 it was handed over to the AURIS.

History
Thulin K
The Thulin K was designed in 1916 by Dr. Thulin of the Swedish AB Thulinverken.
It was a single seat fighter.
The shoulder plane had a wooden construction and no flaps. It had a Thulin A rotary engine of 90 horsepower. This was derived from the French Gnome rotary engine.
Two examples were built for Swedish Flygvapnet and twelve examples for the Dutch Navy.
Also a two-seat version was built, in which the instructor and the pupil sat in tandem.
Three examples were built for the Dutch Navy.
Thulin LA
The Thulin LA, a biplane trainer, was designed in 1917 and was based on the earlier Thulin E and Thulin L. These were derived from the Albatros B.I
The Thulin LA had a custom fuselage, empennage and another engine.
Fifteen examples were built, of which ten of the Dutch Navy.

During 1917 twelve single seat fighters of the type Thulin K were ordered at he Swedish AB Enoch Thulins Aeroplanfabrik. These small aircraft were armed with two machine-guns.
Also, three examples of the twoseat version, The Thulin KA, of this fighter were ordered for training purposes.
Furthermore ten Thulin LA training aircraft were purchased to succeed the Farman. In practice, the aircraft did not comply, mainly because of the unreliable engines.

The linen parts of the aircraft were varnished, as was usual at that time.
The wooden pieces leading to the hood were also painted white.
The metal hood and spinner were treated against corrosion by a coating. Judging by photographs, this was not a clear coat, but possibly treated with a coloured varnish.
The colour is fact very similar to the rest of the unit and is clearly not white (painted metal).
