In service with RNlNAS and NEIAF

In service with RNLNAS.

Late 1941, 48 Douglas DB-7B Boston torpedo bombers were ordered. Due to the rapid Japanese advance they could not be delivered on time.

Given the urgency the U.S. government decided to assign a number of 32 Douglas DB-7B Boston IIIs attack bombers from a running production order for the RAF to the Dutch navy.
Six aircraft were shipped and arrived on February 27, 1942 in the port of Tjilatjap.
The aircraft were unloaded on the quay and there was started with the assembly. Early March was the first plane ready, a second one was in an advanced stage, when the first bombing of Tjalatjap occurred.
Both aircraft escaped from the bombing and on March 5 one aircraft succeeded to start and to fly to Tasikmala. After another raid, the situation had become untenable and the Dutch had to retreat. At least one DB-7B fell in Japanese hands.

The other aircraft were still on their way and were directed to Australia and handed over to the RAAF.

In service with NEIAF.

In April 1942 the 18th Squadron NEIAF was established.
it was equipped with the already arrived North American B-25C Mitchells N5-132, N5-134, N5-135, N5-151 and N5-161. (see the article North American B-25 Mitchell of the NEIAF.). Due to lack of parts, tools, etc., the combat readiness of the squadron was very low. The USAAC was eager to take over the five Mitchells and suggested to exchange them with Douglas A-20 Bostons. The NEIAF considered this type less suited for the task of no 18 squadron NEI because of their shorter range and bomb load, so the NEIAF did not agree with this proposal

Nevertheless rather unexpected the first of a total of about fourteen Douglas A-20As arrived on 7 June 1942. On June 12, 1942 arrived the next three A-20As and the rest shortly thereafter.
On June 16, the first aircraft, registrations 40-077, 40-101 and 10-082 were already flown back to Brisbane. On June 18 a fourth A-20A with registration 40-155, was returned to 22 Squadron, RAAF at Richmond. On June 23, the remaining ten aircraft were handed over to 22 Squadron RAAF.

The Douglas A-20A Boston has been in use for about two weeks by no 18 Squadron NEIAF. There were a few flights made by the Dutch crews, such as Lt. Hagers.

Further information about these aircraft is very welcome!

The Douglas A-20As of the 18th Squadron NEI were directly from the USAAC and had the USAAC standard paint scheme for that period.
It is not certain whether the aircraft were equipped with Dutch markings (given the very short period this is unlikely).

History

In March 1931 a Fokker F-10A of TWA crashed due to a wing fracture.
This accident meant that all aircraft with a wooden wing should be inspected thoroughly. The result was that many aircraft had to be withdrawn from use within a year, so the airline companies had to look for a replacement.

TWA ordered sixty Boeing 247 aircraft. Boeing, however, was very busy with an order for United Airlines, largely owned by Boeing itself.
TWA asked several other aircraft manufacturers for a design and quotation based on a specification for a, preferably all-metal,three-engined airliner.

Douglas, however, presented a twin-engine all-metal aircraft for twelve passengers. TWA ordered under certain conditions an example of this Douglas DC-1.
The DC-1 made the first flight in July 1933 and was delivered in December of the same year.
This aircraft really surpassed all expectations, so TWA ordered a series of twenty machines, designated as DC-2.

It was 60 cm longer than the DC-1 and could carry fourteen passengers. The first DC-2 made its first flight in May 1934 and was soon delivered to TWA.

In 1933 Fokker acquired the licensing and sales rights of the DC-2 for the whole of Europe and later also for the DC-3 and eventually sold 39 DC-2's and 65 DC-3'sin Europe. Fokker never built any of example of these types. 18 DC-2's and 25 DC-3's were sold to the KLM.

Eventually, 193 DC-2's were built, often adapted to customer's wishes and often equipped with different engines.

Dutch Communication Flight RAF.

The solely aircraft used in Dutch military service, was before the second world war in use with KLM as PH-ALE. During the Second World War is was, though still KLM owned, used by BOAC as G-AGBH and had RAF camouflage applied. The crew were KLM employees.

At the end of the war the aircraft was hired for a while by the Dutch Government from KLM and used with 1316 Dutch Communications Flight.

History

The Dornier Wal, one of the most famous German flying boats of the time, made its first flight on 6 November 1922. The Wal, designed by Claude Dornier, was a development of the Dornier Gs.1 from 1921.
To avoid problems with the Treaty of Versailles [Germany was not allowed to build aircraft] the Wal was built in Italy by Costruzioni Meccaniche Aeronautiche SA. This company was specially created to built the Wal.
A special feature was that it was built entirely of Duraluminum, further it featured 'stummels', a sort of stabilization on both sides of the hull, developed by Claude Dornier, and in addition it had a monoplane configuration.
One of the first orders came from Spain for six aircraft. That land also acquired a license for production by  CASA in Madrid.
Shortly afterwards the Japanese Kawasaki also obtained a license for the construction of the Dornier Wal, later followed by Aviolanda Papendrecht, The Netherlands and also for the American Dornier plant in the United States
Until 1931 the typet was built in both military and civilian variants in Pisa, Italy.

In 1925, four flying boats were taken over by a German airline Aero Lloyd for the line Danzig - Stockholm and Danzig -  Berlin; the aircraft were flown by Swedish and Italian crews. A year later, the aircraft were taken over by Lufthansa, which used them also for transatlantic mail flights.
The Norwegian polar explorer Amundsen also used the Dornier Wal for his North Pole expedition.

The Wal could be equipped with a variety of engines, depending on the choice of the client, who had to ensure that the desired engines were delivered at the Dornier factory for installation.

Hence a variety of models and performance arose. As the engines became bigger and stronger, Dornier had often to make adjustments to the construction because of the increased power.
The first Wal could carry a load of 1000 kg, the version that Amundsen used could carry 4000 kg.

Eventually, some three hundred aircraft were built in twenty variants.
The designations for the latter types were 8-ton or 10-ton Wal (their weight). In 1933 the 8-ton Military Wal was designated Dornier Wall 33 and later as Do-15.
A further development of the Wal was the Dornier Do-18.
The fourteen tons Do Superwal with four engines, built in 1928, was a passenger aircraft for twenty passengers.

History

Douglas developed the DC-4 in response to requests from Eastern and United Airlines, after the failed DC-4E, which proved too complicated and uneconomical.

Before the type entered production World War Two broke out and all contracts were taken over by the USAF, designating the aircraft as C-54; US Navy gave it the designation R5D.

The first C-54 made its first flight on 14 February 1942. 1163 Examples were built between 1942 and 1946. After the war a further 79 DC-4s were built.

After the war the type was developed into the larger DC-6 and DC-7.

In service with NGAT (Netherlands Governent Air Transport) and NEIAF.

In service with Netherlands Government Air Transport.

The NGAT was in fact the successor of no. 1316 (Dutch Communications) Flight. Autumn 1945 fourteen C-54s were acquired from the USAF by the Dutch Government.

These aircraft were completely overhauled and modified for transport of 28 passengers and 2000 kg freight.

Initially the orange triangle was applied as national insignia and also "military" serials were added. The aircraft were property of the Dutch Government and flown by KLM crew. One of the reasons was that in those days it was forbidden for civil aircraft to use several (military) airfields along the route to Netherlands East Indies. Spring 1947 the situation has changed and the aircraft were officially handed over to the KLM and received a civil KLM colour scheme and also civil registrations.

See also the site of Herman Dekker for more information about this subject.

In service with NEIAF.

The four Skymasters arrived in November 1946 and entered service with no 19 squadron NEIAF. The aircraft flew mainly for NIGAT, Netherlands-Indies Government Air Transport.
The aircraft were meant for exploitation by the KNILM (Koninklijke Nederlands-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij).
As this came to nothing, the aircraft were sold to KLM in August
