Grasshoppers
Many of you will remember this display team of the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
They became well known when they acquired the official status as (Dutch) display team.
The Grasshopper team, equipped with the trusty Alouette III helicopter, performed in many air shows in Europe. The aircraft had an attractive red white and blue colour scheme applied.
The crew changed partially every year, so I decided not to mention the crew members in the history below.
A peak was a special TV show in 1995. This show was flown at the terrain of the "Westergasfabriek" at Amsterdam in cooperation with the Helicopter String Quartet of Karl-Heinz Stockhausen.
Shortly after this shown the team was disbanded because of the withdrawal of the Alouette III from operational service in 1995.
Below an overview of the most important periods of the Grasshopper team over the years.
1973
Spring 1973 four pilots of 299 squadron decided to compile an air show because the sixtieth anniversary of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, celebrated at Deelen air force base.
Thus-far only performances of a single Alouette III were seen at air shows.
These four pilots were lieutenant Gert-Jan Sijtema; Lieutenant Menno van de Berg; 2nd lieutenant Jan Jansen and lieutenant Harry van Dam.
A problem with display flying and especially formation flying with the Alouette III were its instability and mainly the lack of a fixed target on the aircraft.
Lt. Sijtema designed the concept of the show and during the months preceding the anniversary show, the program was developing to its final form.
Of course much attention was paid to safety and rescue procedures. The figures generally derived their name from the pattern that emerged during the preparation on paper. A well known pattern was the ‘onion’.
The evening before the show large yellow rectangles were painted on both sides of the aircraft. On the underside of the fuselage a large yellow "G" was added, under the sliding doors the name of the team was visible in yellow lettering.
After the show the yellow paint was washed away. The serials of the aircraft were not visible.

1974
The team stayed together, just Harry van Dam left and was succeeded by Flight Lieutenant Rik Spaan.
Further a fifth pilot was added as reserve, Flight Lieutenant Wil Korenhof.
The first official display was flown on June 5, 1974 at the "Dag van de Luchtmacht", at Duindigt. This time the aircraft had a special colour scheme applied.
Yellow, plastic stripes were attached to the fuselage.
Also an air show was flown at the Open Day at air base.
A request for an air show at Ahlhorn, Germany, was rejected by the Air Force Staff. The team was disbanded shortly afterwards. The aircraft used were: A-217; A-543; A-281; A-324; A-494.

1975
The show draw attention of the media, especial the TROS.
This broadcast association wanted to make a program about the team. The team gathered again and in February 1975 the recordings were made.
Alas the Air Force Staff did not give permission for a show.
After considerable lobbying on the staff the team was permitted to perform an air show at both Open Days at airbase Leeuwarden and Volkel respectively. No special colour scheme was applied.
1977
In 1977 again a display was flown at the Open Day at air base Gilze-Rijen.
No special colour scheme was applied for this show.
1978
Several shows were flown and also the first international performance was flown at USAFE-base Hahn, Germany.
The Alouettes had a special colour scheme with yellow stripes.
The name of the team was applied on the underside of the fuselage.
Aircraft used: A-336; A-374; A-319; A-235; A-391.

1979
This year the team became the official display team of the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
A new colour scheme was applied, consisting of white slashes.
This scheme was nicknamed ‘zebra-scheme’.
An other important change was that all Alouettes were transferred from squadron 299 to squadron 300, also based at air force base Deelen.
For logistical reasons the 299 squadron was fully equipped with the Bo-105C.
Also an show was flown at Brasschaat, Belgium, because of the 25th anniversary of “Lichte Vliegwezen”. Aircraft used: A-246; A-390; A-451; A-465 and A-470.

1980
This year a brand new paint scheme was applied to the aircraft, the well known red, white and blue colour scheme. This scheme was used till the last show of the team in 1995.
Further the team received two spare aircraft, which also had the colourful paint scheme applied.
A first show should be flown at the International Air Tattoo, Greenham Common, but due to some misunderstanding this show wasn't flown.

1981
This year an air show at the famous IAT at Greenham Common was flown. This show was very good, so the team received the UK Shell Oil Trophy for best air show.
Much attention was for the Public Relations of the team. A small van was used, so the team could sell the leaflets, stickers and the like.
1982
For the first time smoke generators were used to make an attractive show.

1988
This year the RNlAF celebrated its 75th anniversary. The official "KLu 75" logo was applied on the tail.
Aircraft used over the years: A-398; A-281; A-324; A-350 (Klu75); A-351; A-390 (Klu 75); A-406; A-453; A-465 (Klu 75); A-499; A-543.

The Grasshopper-team was officially disbanded on Augustus 8, 1995 due to depreciation of the Alouette.
Colour Information
The first series of Alouettes were delivered in overall Dark green (donkergroen mat 19), the second series were overall RAL 6014.
The serials were applied in white. Later, when the Bo-105 was introduced in 1975 and 1976, the white serials were replaced with black ones, which are less visible.
Early eighties the camouflage of the Alouettes was changed, but the Grasshopper team kept using the well known red, white and blue aircraft.

Dash Four 1956
August 1, 1956 a contest display flying was held at air base Soesterberg. In December 1955 the F-84F-check-out-team, consisting of captain Brey, 312 squadron, captain Van der Meulen Kunee, 311 squadron and captain Themmen, 311 squadron order from the commander Tactical Air force Maurenbrecher to form an aerobatic team, equipped with the F-84F Thunderstreak. Fourth man was flying officer Holsteyn, 312 squadron.
January 4, 1956 was the first training flight of the team.
In June the team changed as flying officer Holsteyn left the team. He was succeeded by flying officer Cosijn, 312 squadron.
The first official Display was flown july 14, 1956 at air base Leeuwarden, because of a parents day.
Two weeks later, august 1, the contest at air base Soesterberg was held. The aircraft were flown by leader captain Brey, captain Van der Meulen Kunee, flying officer Themmen and flying officer Cosijn. The aircraft were sprayed in a special paint scheme of red, white and blue.
The team reached a successful second place, with just a difference of one half point compared with the number one, the Hunter team from air base Leeuwarden.
Later in august 1956 a display was flown at air base Volkel because of a visit of Lieutenant-colonel Berlijn.
Late august 1956 captain Brey left military service. He was succeeded by flying officer Themmen as team leader. Flying officer Veenhuysen became the new second man of the team.
The renewed team flew a first display in October 1956 because of a parent day.
Dash Four 1957
In 1957 there were again contests display flying, this time at air base Gilze-Rijen. And once again a team from air base Volkel was sent to this contest.
April 1957 training started with leader captain Themmen, flying officer Van de Schaft, captain Van der Meulen Kunee and flying officer Veenhuysen.
The aircraft used were bare metal. This time the aircraft were equipped with a smoke generator. A small oil tank was added just behind the canopy, a pipeline run from this tank to the tailpipe. It is not known when this modification was added.
May 29, 1957 prince Bernhard visited the airbase and a display was flown. The aircraft were overall bare metal and polished.
All serials and squadron codes were removed.
June 7, 1957 three Streaks of the team flew a show because of a parent day at air base Volkel.
The first display with smoke was at June 24, 1958. The Streaks used, had a red and white paint scheme.
The contest mentioned above was at august 24, 1957. Seven teams took part of this contest. Dash Four became fourth. The aircraft were flown leader captain Themmen, flying officer Groothoff, captain Van der Meulen Kunee and flying officer Veenhuysen.

Dash Four 1958
In 1958 the Royal Netherlands Air Force existed 45 years. An air show was planned on July 5 at air base Soesterberg.
The Dash Four team started training again in march 1958.
Several NATO members sent a display team to the Netherlands because of the championship display flying. Participants were USA, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, England, Portugal and Turkey.
The Dash Four won the national championship on June 24, 1958 at Volkel air base.
The Thunderstreaks were painted is a special red and white paint scheme. The aircraft were flown by leader captain Themmen, captain Van der Meulen Kunee, flying officer Groothoff and flying officer Veenhuysen.
The team also won the NATO championship on july 5 and was invited for World Congres of Flight, Las Vegas, April 12 till 19 April 1958.
Note: Just before the team left to the USA, they are on a photo before a bare metal Streak without any serial, so this should be at the end of 1958 of beginning of 1959.
March 22, 1959 the team departed to USA for the show at Las Vegas.
They used USAF Thunderstreaks, with serials 26945, 26962, 26971 and 26979. These aircraft were from an older batch with older less powerful engines, so some problems occurred during training at Luke AFB.
The team was for training stationed at Luke AFB until April 3, 1959. Later the team moved to Nellis AFB, Las Vegas.
April 9, Veenhuysen crashed with 26931. Two aircraft flown by Veenhuysen and Van der Meulen Kunee, hit each other. Veenhuysen needed to bail out, whereas Van der Meulen Kunee managed to land his heavily damaged aircraft.
April 12 and April 15 the team displayed with USAF Streaks. These were painted in a special scheme, consisting of an orange arrow and the blue DASH-FOUR badge on the front of the fuselage.
Also Dutch roundels were applied on the aircraft.
May 6, 1959 the team returned to the Netherlands. One of the crew already went home earlier.
June 19, 1959 a last display was flown at a parent day at air base Volkel. The aircraft used were standard Thunderstreaks.
Van der Meulen Kunee was replaced by flying officer Schreurs. Schreurs also flew with the Lockheed T-33 display team of 313 squadron, The Skysharks. The same day the Dash Four team was separated.

Colour and serial information.
The USAF Streaks used, were in standard USAF. Photos show the inscription "U.S. Air Force" apparently being removed or painted over in a very light grey colour.
On your model I think it's best being represented by painting this in light grey or matt aluminium.
The drawings shown don't show the standard aircraft stencilling.
