History
The bi-plane Nieuport XI was developed in 1915 from the single seat, monoplane Nieuport XI. The reason for this confusing double designation is unknown. To distinct both types from each other, the biplane had a "B" (= Biplane) added to its designation.
The French Air Force had divided it aircraft in several classes:
Class A Reconnaissance plane Class B Light single seat fighter Class C Heavy multi seat fighter aircraft Class D Canon armed aircraft Class E Bomber
So the designation of the new biplane Nieuport XI was in fact Nie.XI BB (= Nieuport type XI Biplane, Class B). Soon the type was nicknamed BéBé.
